Class Project

Each LAC class is challenged to put its members' wide-ranging skills to use in a project that will provide some type of benefit to the Aiken County community.  Projects are chosen through debate and consensus of class members utilizing ideas spawned during class sessions. Ideas can range from direct assistance to a local charity to lobbying state or local government for changes to legislation or budgets. Work on the project is done outside class time and serves as a type of “capstone” to the LAC experience.

Previous class projects have included:

2008-2009: established a one-day camp for underprivileged children in Aiken County called "LIFE Jamboree," which assisted 50 middle-school-aged children to recognize their own potential
2007-2008: established Savannah River Cancer Center library; completed room makeover at Helping Hands
2006-2007: designed a blueprint for a middle school “Suspension Camp” program w/Aiken County Public Schools, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Aiken Dept of Public Safety, Aiken/Barnwell Mental Health
2005-2006: successfully lobbied Aiken County Council to provide stable recurring funding for Aiken HELP LINE 2-1-1
2004-2005: conducted charity Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala dinner/dance tent party to benefit Child Advocacy Center of Aiken
2003-2004: conducted charity polo match to benefit Free Medical Clinic of Aiken County
1999-2000: developed a new state law that made permanent bodily harm resulting from child abuse a felony (previous penalty was only a misdemeanor)
